In collaboration with Clementi Youth Network, Civilians Association (Singapore) (CAS)organized the inspiring Breaking Barriers - Human Library event at Clementi Community Centre on 22nd June 2024. This initiative aimed to empower youths by connecting them with individuals who have defied conventional paths to create social impact.

The event began with the unique Human Library session, where seven “human books” shared their transformative journeys.

Participants engaged in one-on-one interactions, asking questions and delving into the personal stories of resilience, overcoming disabilities, and pursuing unconventional careers. Each participant had the chance to “read” two human books, enriching their understanding of diverse experiences.

Following the Human Library, a breakout session encouraged attendees to reflect on their insights and learn from one another. This collaborative discussion created a safe space for exchanging perspectives and personal growth.

A highlight of the event was the esteemed panel featuring Dr. Tan Wu Meng, Advisor to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisations; Nor Erdawati Omar, Officer for Special Education Needs at Qifa Primary School; and Lee Zi Quan, Chairman of the People’s Association Youth Movement Council. Their stories inspired participants to embrace challenges and strive for impactful futures.

The event concluded on a high note, with participants gaining confidence and renewed motivation to break their own barriers. Volunteers walked away with a fresh perspective on organizing engaging, dialogue-driven events. Aligned with CAS’s mission to foster community resilience and empower individuals, the Human Library reaffirmed the transformative power of storytelling in creating a more inclusive society.
