The Breaking Barriers Seminar, held on October 19, 2024, at SINDA, was a transformative event co-organized by Civilians Association (Singapore), SINDA Young Association, and Medaki. Aligned with CAS’s vision of fostering inclusivity and inspiring individuals to overcome societal norms, the seminar served as a platform for youths to engage in meaningful conversations with trailblazing individuals who have pursued unconventional paths.

The event commenced with a warm welcome by Ms. Dash Shanmugam, who introduced the seminar’s theme and provided insights into CAS’s mission of driving change through community engagement. Mr. MP Sellvem, a key CAS figure, shared a poignant personal story from his National Service days, resonating deeply with the attendees and setting the tone for the session.

A highlight of the seminar was the interactive Human Library breakout groups featuring three inspiring speakers: Luo Chen Jun from the public sector, Jai, a youth worker at Boys Town, and Claudia Ruth Selvakumar, an alumna of ITE College Central now pursuing her undergraduate studies at NUS. Participants rotated through these groups every 20 minutes, enabling intimate, candid discussions about the speakers' unique life journeys and challenges.

The seminar encouraged participants to reimagine success and explore paths beyond conventional norms.

The stories of resilience, passion, and determination shared by the panelists left a profound impact, inspiring youths to challenge societal expectations and pursue their dreams with confidence.

The event concluded with an open forum, where attendees reflected on the takeaways, exchanged ideas, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect with such extraordinary individuals. Volunteers and organizers noted the energy and enthusiasm among participants, emphasizing how the seminar sparked a renewed sense of purpose and empowerment.

With over 30 attendees and a strong support team of 12 volunteers, the Breaking Barriers Seminar exemplified CAS’s commitment to uplifting the community through education, inspiration, and collaboration. This event will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for future initiatives aimed at breaking barriers and shaping brighter futures.
