Join Hands, Open Hearts. Be A Special Friend – Collaboration with BeKindSG
5 April 2025 • 4 mins read

At the heart of Civilians Association (Singapore)’s mission is a simple but powerful belief: meaningful change begins with human connection. “Join Hands, Open Hearts. Be A Special Friend” embodied this belief through a heartfelt Hari Raya celebration that brought volunteers and residents together in a spirit of care, dignity and shared joy.
Held on 5 April 2025 at Moral Welfare Home, the programme was organised by Singapore Silent Heroes Alumni in collaboration with Be Kind SG. Twenty-two volunteers gathered with a common purpose to give back through presence, compassion and genuine engagement. From the moment the session began, the atmosphere was warm and inclusive, reflecting CAS’ commitment to building caring and connected communities.
The morning opened with light dance exercises led by Adeline from Be Kind SG, encouraging residents to move, laugh and participate at their own pace. This was followed by graceful Malay dance performances by Lenggok Selayang, which added cultural richness and festive energy to the celebration. Music soon became a shared language, as sing-alongs led by Owan Tan, Chairman of the SSH Alumni Committee, and Xinyi from Be Kind SG invited residents and volunteers alike to join in familiar festive tunes.
Alongside the performances, volunteers sat with residents to take part in colouring activities, creating moments of quiet connection and conversation. These simple interactions became the heart of the programme, reminding everyone present that companionship and attention can be as meaningful as any performance. As one volunteer reflected during the event,
“Sometimes, the greatest gift we offer is not what we bring, but how fully we show up.”
The celebration concluded on a touching note with Kit Chan’s “Home,” chosen in anticipation of SG60, followed by birthday songs dedicated to residents celebrating their birthdays in April. The closing moments captured the essence of CAS’ vision, where shared experiences foster belonging and reaffirm the value of every individual.
Beyond the festivities, the programme created lasting impact for both residents and volunteers. Participants left with smiles, renewed spirits and a sense of being remembered, while volunteers gained deeper appreciation for the importance of empathy and presence in service. The experience reinforced CAS’ goal of nurturing socially responsible citizens who serve with heart and humility.
Civilians Association (Singapore) extends sincere appreciation to Sherry Soon, Singapore Silent Heroes Alumni Member and Be Kind SG Member, for coordinating this meaningful collaboration. Together, the initiative stood as a reminder that when hands join and hearts open, even a single morning can leave a lasting imprint of kindness and hope.
